Hey, Stack.
Calling in to reflect on my first weeks working at the regional operator of our electrical grid.
We help people with their power distribution at their home or company. Making sure that there’s electricity flowing, or gas as well. And so, I’m a first line operator, receiving calls.
It’s been the first week interacting with clients over the phone, and it’s a very peculiar experience, I have to say. You get a kind of adrenaline rush as you wait before the call comes in, and then it could really be anyone with any kind of question. So, it’s pretty exciting.
You get a feeling of being of service to the community. Making sure everybody gets supplied with energy, in the very material sense of the word. But I like it.
Now, there are times where I sit in between calls, and I try to not only do some facial yoga, because when you can only use your voice in a conversation, the voice becomes very important. That’s something we have been taught in the training beforehand.
It’s not only using your voice, but also maybe putting on a smile. Now, I’m a joyful person, but still, I would recommend you maybe apply this in your own life. Forcing a bit of a smile while you talk over the phone makes you sound a little bit more open and…
it’s a good tip.
So, there’s the facial yoga for the smile, and then there’s the breathing.
Just the breathing of the body, keeping you grounded.
And then there’s a sudden realization of… who am I talking to, and who is the one talking?
You have the smile, you have the breathing, and then this kind of realization, or insight, dropping into… who’s doing the talking here? And then usually the call comes in, and you get a kind of smooth interaction.
And it’s something you cannot grasp really.
Is it one thing talking to itself? That’s a very charming and seductive answer to that one. Sometimes I fall back to that explanation, but it’s a little bit too neat, no?
You really don’t know what’s happening, in a way. And that can be a joyful thing nonetheless. In the situation we are in, at least. We’re sitting in a good chair at our desk, quite comfortable, and there, the notion of things being unpredictable...
For some people it’s quite tense, but I find, when I look around, it’s a joy to be able to do this job.
So, just a little bit of reporting back to you on that front. Thanks for hearing me out and sticking by me.
Have a good rest of your weekend. Bye.
